By Tim Grant, lunavista communications corp

1.   Make it easy for folks to sign up for your newsletter. Make sign up it easy a nd obvious. Include sign up on your home page (usually your highest trafficked page) and require minimal information to complete the form.

2.  Entice folks to sign up. Offer something for signing up: a chance to win, a white paper, promotional materials, discounts etc.

3.   Be consistent with your send frequency.  Let your audience know how often to expect to hear from you.

4.   Send B2B email Tues - Thurs, just after the start of the day (9:30 am or so) or just after the lunch hour (1:30 pm or so).

5.   Send B2C Tues through Thursday 5-8 pm, or between Friday evening and Sunday afternoon.

6.   Use a "From" name that your readers will recognize instantly, such as your company name, or a well known person from your company.  Be consistent! The from name is an important factor in deciding whether or not to open the message.

7.   Don't use ALL CAPS or multiple explanation points in your subject line, as these are common SPAM filter triggers.

8.   Limit subject lines (or at least the important points of) to 50 characters or less. Most email preview panes only allow for this many characters.

9.   Improve deliverability - start your message with a statement such as "To ensure receipt of our emails, please add this address to your address book."

10.   Contrary to popular belief, you can use the word "free" in a subject line and avoid SPAM filters. Don't use it as the first word of the subject line, type it in all caps, or in conjunction with exclamation points.

Bonus email marketing tip:

More things that can trigger a SPAM filter (in subject lines) - quotation marks, dollar signs, exclamation points or toll free numbers.
